Band Openings Continue

The bands continue to be good both for HF and VHF operation.  Openings on six and ten are still happening but not as frequently as back in the fall.Twenty meters has been offering nightly openings to early-risers in Europe and the middle east. The band usually stays open at my QTH until after I go QRT around midnight.

The Mississippi QSO Party seemed to have a pretty good increase in participation this year. I could not work as hard this year due to voice issues but still did manage to get just over a thousand QSOs in the twelve-hour event. This gave me a good opportunity to work with the big 2000 foot directly fed loop on upper bands and it really worked out well. I used it to keep from having to turn the beam so often.

It was nice to have that T-10 when I needed a little extra gain to get through. We will find out mid-summer who theis year’s MS QSP Party winners are.

Fresh and Salt Water
Fishing Reports,
Fish Tales, and Information

Another Friday trip and what a difference a week makes. From lousy weather last week to absolutely beautiful August 19 and 20!

We headed out to the rigs south of Horn Island in mid afternoon and could run as fast as we wanted on the smooth seas. Steve and I started catching fish immediately and Steve soon had experience with some new species. Triggers and spades along with the ever present sharks accounted for most of the action at the first rig in 80 feet of water. We moved to another rig at the 80 foot contour and started catching snapper on almost every drop. Snapper season was closed so we had to release them but it was fun to catch them and wish we could take them to the table.

Our plan had been to stay at the rig over night but Steve was starting to feel a little sea sick so I headed in. Much better to make the run to the island in daylight rather than after dark. On the way in I saw a nice king skyrocket ahead of the boat so quickly dropped the trolling spoons over. A big jack hit almost immediately as I placed the rod in the holder and he was soon caught and released. We then moved inside the island and caught white trout, ground mullet and sharks during the night between sleeping periods.

Morning gave us a chance to troll outside the island where we caught several spanish mackerel, blue fish, and those wild jumping lady fish. We had a couple of big fish runs but did not get either to the boat.

I’ll include a photo below.

As I write this hurricane Irene is churning just past Puerto Rico so I don’t know when the conditions will allow me to go back out and try them again. Until then tight lines to all you fishermen reading this post.
